Geocache Description:

I was stumped once, and now I have been stumped again.

This geocache is hidden on Langley Pond just around the corner and out of site of the finish line tower used for rowing competitions. You will need a watercraft to find this geocache. The distance from the boat ramp to the cache is approximately 1.15 miles or a 2.3-mile round trip.

Many people from Aiken County like to refer to Langley Pond as the largest pond in the world. The Aiken County Website even has this phrase on the page about Langley Pond, "Known as the world’s largest pond! Just short of being a lake." However, there does not seem to be an official definition of a pond or a lake. Instead, the names of bodies of water seem to use the words pond or lake arbitrarily depending on the local people who named them. Great Pond in Maine is more widely referred to as the largest pond in the world with an area of over 8,500 acres. That is certainly larger than Langley Pond, which has an area of 250 acres.

In November 2014, a man walking his dog noticed that the water’s color in Horse Creek below the dam looked different than normal. Local officials subsequently determined that the structure was leaking, so the water level in the dam was lowered below the leaks. The county was determined to repair, renovate and modernize the dam, which was finished in April 2020 at a cost of more than $14 million. Once the dam was repaired, a $1.7 million facilities project began, which included the beach area, pavilions, parking, and an inclusive playground. The park reopened in April 2022 and has become a popular destination for water and inland beach enthusiasts.
