Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series to highlight the history and development at Pentridge, known previously as H.M. Prison Pentridge and now identified as Penal Establishment Pentridge. Caches in this HMPP series are:

  • HMPP – H.M. Prison Pentridge   (GCAHRT9),
  • HMPP – Separate and Silent       (GCAHNKT),
  • HMPP – Industry and Education            (GCAKPNR),
  • HMPP – Precinct to work live and play    (GCAHTPR),
  • The series also includes the H.M. Prison Pentridge Ad Lab.

These caches can be done in any order except for HMPP - Precinct to work, live and play, which requires clues from the other caches.

Being a guard was a highly regimented process with strict dress code requirements and duties being determined by the time of day. Through out the time of Pentridge there was pressure to reduce expenses by having less guards. After 1958 the training provided to the guards improved considerably; this resulted in their offical title changing from warders to 'Prison Officers'. One of the more tedious jobs of a guard was to man the guard posts and watch over an area of the prison wall.

Guard posts were built around the perimeter of the wall and some placed internally as well. The main guard posts were designed so that prisoners could not tell if they were being watched or not. Some of the 10 guard posts around the inner prison were not manned. Also not manned were most of the outer guard posts (11-18).  Originally the guard posts had no roof (added before 1900) and toilets (added in 1970). The current Pentridge Piazza precinct has 9 of the original guard towers still standing. Guard posts 8 and 10 existed at the gates in the walls at ether end of the Sentry Lane (fittingly). After 2014 when Pentridge was sold, the guard posts were restored as close as possible to the oginal watch towers.

This listed co-ordinates will take you to one of the watchtowers.  To solve this puzzle identify the watch towers below with the help of the map above with watch tower numbers in red.  The cache can be found at:

South 37 4

   -2

East 144  5

   +1.     -1  -1   -1

Please note that the watch towers were all altered during the restoration in about 2015. Most of them were restored to their configuration at the beginning of the 20th century. The pictures here were taken in 2024.
