This is a small container cache with a logbook and pencil hid within the structure welcoming tourists to Gariep. Short people might need a buddy or a brick, but it is still an extremely easy cache.
Allow me to introduce you to the first cache in a carefully curated series strategically placed around Gariep, a town steeped in history near the Gariep Dam.
My parents recently retired and chose Gariep as their new home. My mom has been a Geocaching companion of mine (DJ_Pac_Man) for quite some time. In fact, she's been by my side during many Geocaching adventures, prompting me to finally create her very own account (Varkie63).
We were both surprised to find a lack of caches in this historically significant town. To address this, we took our time identifying five unique locations, starting with this one at the entrance to Gariep. We invested extensive effort into researching the historical significance of each spot and adding them to the details of each cache.
The town of Gariep was originally called Onajekrag (see image), and was built in the 1960’s to house the construction workers of the nearby dam wall. The town spans an area of 24.83 km⊃2; at an elevation of 1,320 m. According to a 2011 census, Gariep had a population of 1,568 residents, with a racial distribution of 31.0% Black African, 47.6% Coloured, 0.4% Indian/Asian, 19.6% White, and 1.3% from other ethnic backgrounds. The primary languages spoken in 2011 were Afrikaans (76.9%), Xhosa (11.1%), English (4.9%), Sotho (4.6%), and other languages (2.5%).
Gariep is a common stopover for travelers journeying between Johannesburg and Cape Town. This cache, like the others in the series, aims to showcase the deep-rooted historical richness of the area. I’ve registered these caches on my mom’s newly created account, as she will be overseeing the maintenance of these caches, seeing that I'm currently residing a considerable distance away.
Here's a brief overview of the other caches in the series in the order we think flows best when traveling from one to the other:
#2 Norvalspont Bridge: Explore the engineering marvel of Norvalspont Bridge.
#3 Concentration Camp Memorial: Reflect on history at the Concentration Camp Memorial.
#4 Hydroelectric Power Station: Learn about the region's power generation at the Hydroelectric Power Station.
#5 Gariep Dam Wall: Conclude your journey at the iconic Gariep Dam Wall, a symbol of human ingenuity and natural beauty.
Feel free to immerse yourself in the history and charm of Gariep. Enjoy the Geocaching experience, and may your explorations be filled with discovery. Happy hunting!
