Geocache Description:

Valley of the Rio Puritama

I would like to invite you with this earthcache to the magical valley of the Rio Puritama.
In the area around San Pedro de Atacama there are many gorge-like valleys where water has cut deep into the stone. But the Rio Puritama valley is a geological peculiarity because it cuts between two different classes of rock. On one slope we see sedimentary rock (limestone) with many fossils and on the other side of the stream we see volcanic rhyolite rock.

The Rio Puritama Valley is located within the Puritama Conservation Area. The Puritama River originates from a geothermal spring near the center of the reserve and feeds the Puritama Hot Springs. The area also includes part of the Puripica River, which flows into the Puritama River near Guatín. The area has a marginal high altitude climate with low relative humidity and large temperature fluctuations between day and night. Between July and August, rivers freeze at night and melt during the day. They increase their flow due to tropical rains in the southern summer months, mainly between January and March. Strong southwesterly winds can also reach up to 100 km/h. The particularly strong winds between September and November carry fine sediments and are a major factor in erosion.

The 3 known rock classes are:
a)
Magmatites (all rocks that arise from magma and lava)
Well-known examples are: basalt, gabbro, granite, ryolite
b)
Sediments (depositary rocks, layers can usually be seen.)
Well-known examples are: sandstone, limestone, claystone, conglomerate
c)
Metamorphites (transformation rocks)
Well-known examples are: slate, marble, gneiss

The forces that shape the valley here are weathering and erosion

E
rosion
We differentiate:

Fluvial erosion                           Erosion caused by water

Glacial erosion                          Erosion by glaciers

Abrasion marine                       Erosion

Aeolian erosion                        Wind erosion

In order to be able to log the cache, please answer the following questions.

Task 1 on WP1

Here erosion has formed a rock. What animal does the shape of the rock remind you of?

Task 1 on WP2

Look at both sides of the river and describe them (shape, layering). Stay on the path. Then tell me which class of rock is the right bank and which is the left bank. (seen downstream)

Task on WP3

Look north to the other bank. What do you see on the other bank: a cave, a narrow gorge, a huge boulder.

Task on GZ

Here the official path ends at the stream and you can hike up to the road or back to the parking lot (which we recommend). The valley turns north and can no longer be walked without a guide, as the area there is private.
What forms of erosion shaped the valley?

Task 5

A beautiful photo of you in the valley, there are so many magical motifs.

All questions should be answered through observation and reading the listing.

Schau Richtung Norden ans andere Ufer.
