Geocache Description:

Doing some cache maintenance, and saw this canal crossing was now open. So, I added this to the series.  Neat little pet sematary nearby (haven't tried to bring an animal to life yet; SK warned about that...).

One of a series of caches to trace the route of the Helena Valley Irrigation District canal.

The Helena Valley Irrigation District was formed in part to provide mitigation for the irrigated land that was inundated when Canyon Ferry Reservoir was built. Currently, 18,000 acres are irrigated through this project. The project was multi-purpose, and included building capacity for municiple water for the city of Helena. The Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir, which feeds the canal that runs clockwise around the valley, also provides a significant amount of recreation and wildlife habitat. Salmon are a favored target of fisherman, especially through the ice, and when snagging is legal in the fall.

Parking right at the cache, easiest to access if heading West on York Road, shortly after it joins Canyon Ferry Road, but can be carefully entered if going either direction on Canyon Ferry. Watch for merging traffic from Westbound York and CF.

Congratulations to Chufra on the FTF on the last day of 2023! 123123!
