The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque stands as the second main mosque in Kota Kinabalu, following the State Mosque in Sembulan. With characteristics reminiscent of the Prophet's Mosque, nearly 70 percent of its area is surrounded by water. The architectural inspiration is drawn from the Nabawi Mosque, the second holiest site in Islam, located in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The mosque's dome, adorned in blue and gold, reflects the influence of Arabic architecture.

Occupying a 14.83-acre site at Pasir Road on the shores of Likas Bay, along the South China Sea, the mosque is partially enveloped by a man-made lagoon, earning it the endearing nickname, "The Floating Mosque." Boasting a maximum capacity of 12,000 worshipers, the mosque includes amenities such as an ATM, three madrasas, a palliative care clinic, and a collaborative fish farming project with the University Malaysia Sabah. In 2008, the mosque introduced paddle boat rides, offering visitors a unique perspective of the mosque from the water, aligning with the mosque committee's vision to integrate religious, economic, and social aspects into community life.
A prominent tourist destination, the mosque is frequently featured in various tours and is a favored spot for photographers. While open to non-Muslim visitors, access during prayer times is restricted. Modest clothing is required, with Lonely Planet recommending long trousers and covered arms.
On 18 February 2000, the 8th Chief Minister of Sabah, inaugurated the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, marking the declaration of Kota Kinabalu as a city.
