At the posted coordinates, you can see a unique geological feature: Vase Rock, a sea stack, which is the famous landmark of Xiaoliuqiu. In this Earthcache you will learn about sea stacks and their formation.
What is a sea stack?
A sea stack is a geological landform consisting of a steep and often vertical pillar or column of rock that protrudes from the sea or the ocean.
How are sea stacks formed?
Sea stacks are formed through a series of geological processes:
- First of all, a headland - a coastal landform jutting into the sea - is shaped by coastal erosion. Over millions of years, waves and weathering erode away weaknesses in the headland. Sea caves within the headland are created by the repeated pounding of waves.
You can still see verious sea caves in other places around Xiaoliuqiu.
- Over time, erosion will enlarge these sea caves. Eventually the cave breaks through the headland and forms an arch. This arch looks like a natural bridge over the sea.
- As the erosion and weathering continue, the arch is weakening until it finally collapses.
- A tall and detached column of rock is left behind - a sea stack was formed, just like the beautiful Vase Rock here at the coordinates. At the same time, you can also still see the rest of the headland behind you.
- After the formation of a sea stack, erosion and weathering won't stop. In the long run the sea stack will be completely eroded by waves, wind and other natural forces.

Logging Tasks:
- With the help of the listing, explain in your own words how a sea stack is created.
- At the coordinates, take a look at Vase Rock's unique shape. You will easily see that Vase Rock is not a typical sea stack because it is not a vertical column. Please explain in your own words how this unique, untypical shape has been formed. Take into account the location of Vase Rock and which natural forces might have influenced its formation based on that.
- Taking into account your answers of questions 1 and 2 and the information provided in the listing, what will happen to Vase Rock in the long run?
- What can you see on top of Vase Rock? When you know the correct answer, you will understand why this sea stack is called Vase Rock.
- Take a picture of yourself, your GPS or something that belongs to you at the posted coordinates.
Please send me the answers to the questions via the Message Center. After that you can log your find immediately. I will try to answer you as soon as possible. :)
Enjoy your visit and enjoy the view!
