Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Fairview Cemetery so-named because it once overlooked the historic Burgettstown Fairgrounds across the road.

Fairview cemetery was incorporated in 1895 but was probably used even earlier. There are approximately 3,000 graves in the cemetery including at least 160 military veterans and 50 people who died from the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 at the close of World War I.

The fair grounds across the way first opened in 1856 and were in use until 1939.  The fair was at first primarily an agricultural event with farm implements and products on display as well as horse racing.  Later, as farming declined in the area, the fair became more of a carnival.

Now for the cache.  Please approach the cache through the main cemetery entrance on Ostop road. You will be able to drive on gravel lanes to within about 150 feet of the cache.  Although the cemetery has almost no open gravesites remaining, you still may encounter mourners or those paying respects to loved ones.  If so, please consider coming back later.  Also, please limit geocaching to daylight hours. (You wouldn’t want to be in a cemetery after dark anyhow, would you?)  The cache you are looking for is a camouflaged ammo can.  It is not among the graves so please do not disturb them.  There is plenty of room for small trades.  Also, feel free to help yourself to the included muggle cards.

Happy caching!
