The Glade Trail. Originally created alongside a small handful of other ski trails during the mid to late 1930’s as a means for skiers to get back down to Government Camp from what would become Timberline Lodge, which opened in February 1938. In the days before a ski area was formed around the lodge, skiers could ride a bus up to the lodge (not the tram, that was later) and ski back down to Government Camp. According to Lloyd Musser of the Mt Hood Museum, “Trail skiing was so popular that as many as 15 buses worked on weekends transporting skiers back to Timberline so they could ski the 3.5 miles, 2000 feet vertical drop trail several times in a day.”
Today, this beautiful area serves a multitude of purposes; during the winter months, skiers still come down the Glade Trail on their way back to Government Camp, families use this area daily as a sledding zone with their kids, and snowshoers, cross country skiers, and hikers come through here on their way to the Cross Town Trail and beyond. During the summer, hikers and mountain bikers share space on all these local trails. This area can be busy during the winter weekends so rehide it well.

Disclaimer #1: Difficulty rating goes up a level or two if there's a significant amount of snow on the ground. Much of that depends on how you choose to move across the variable seasonal terrain.
