Leap Day. Oh, joy.
The odd leftover day affixed to the end of a dreary little month, thus prolonging this short term frozen hell known as February just a tad bit further. Twenty-eight dark and cold days aren't enough? How about one more day? This peculiar bonus day is often celebrated with potlucks and office birthday parties for those unlucky enough to be born on this day. Can you imagine needing to have 84 birthdays to finally reach 21? Absolutely absurd.
Pessimist: Februrary is over tomorrow.
Normal Human: Um, there's still one more day, remember is a leap year.
Me: Oh, right. February's bonus day of cold and misery. Why couldn't they add this to June? June 31st would have been better.
Normal Human: Hmm. not wrong..
Pessimist: Who the heck decided on February anyways?
Normal Smart Human: Well, Caesar and the philosopher Sosigenes of Alexandria made one important modification: instead of relying on the stars, they would simply add a day to every fourth year. In keeping with the Roman tradition of messing with the length of February, that day would fall in the second month of the year—thus Leap Day was born.
Pessimist: Caesar... What a jerk.
