
100 years ago to the day, Howard Carter opened the lid of the sarcophagus of the mummified body of King Tutankhamun. Celebrate the anniversary of this cache find at the Great Court of the British Museum on Monday 12th February 2024, 12:30pm to 1.30pm.
Meet at the cafe on the east side of the Great Court - the given coordinates. A bag check is done at the entrance to the museum - avoid bringing large bags and your caching TOTT.
In January 1924 the four shrines that was built around the sarcophagus in the antechamber were dismantled. The pinnacle moment came on the 12th February 1924 with the opening of Tutankhamun's sarcophagus. When the heavy granite lid was opened it was the start of another journey of discovery - there were a further three ornate coffins to investigate.
It wasn't until the 28th October 1925 that the mummy of King Tutankhamun was disclosed. We will meet again on that 100th anniversary to celebrate the of the discovery of the world's famous cache - Tutankhamun's Death Mask!
