Nel 1961, a Torino, si svolse Italia '61, la grande Esposizione Internazionale del Lavoro. Fu un evento memorabile organizzato per festeggiare i cento anni dell'Unità d'Italia e la città, in pochi mesi, si trovò al centro del mondo. Da paludi e rovine venne creato un nuovo e spettacolare quartiere per ospitare quella che venne chiamata "La Città delle Meraviglie".  L'esposizione per il centenario voleva celebrare il nostro passato, la nostra storia, ma aveva anche l'obiettivo di proiettare Torino e l'Italia verso il futuro. Come Roma con le Olimpiadi del 1960, anche Torino voleva voltare pagina e lanciarsi, con maggiore forza e determinazione, verso l'avvenire, verso un mondo di benessere e progresso raggiungibile attraverso il lavoro, le scoperte nel campo della scienza, della tecnica e della medicina. Il comprensorio di Italia '61 voleva quindi rappresentare la città del domani, un tuffo negli anni duemila quarant'anni prima che arrivassero. Quasi sette milioni di visitatori in sei mesi di spettacoli, visite di personalità internazionali, convegni e meraviglie di ogni genere, dal Luna Park più grande d'Europa alla funivia per Cavoretto, dall'autobus rosso a due piani, alla meraviglia fra le meraviglie,  la monorotaia di Italia '61, la "ferrovia aerea". In 1961, Italia '61, the great International Labor Exhibition, took place in Turin. It was a memorable event organized to celebrate the hundred years of the Unification of Italy and the city, in a few months, found itself at the center of the world. From swamps and ruins a spectacular new neighborhood was created to house what was called "The City of Wonders". The centenary exhibition wanted to celebrate our past, our history, but also had the aim of projecting Turin and Italy towards the future. Like Rome with the 1960 Olympics, Turin also wanted to turn the page and launch itself, with greater strength and determination, towards the future, towards a world of well-being and progress achievable through work, discoveries in the fields of science, technology and medicine. The Italia '61 district therefore wanted to represent the city of tomorrow, a dive into the 2000s, forty years before they arrived. Almost seven million visitors in six months of shows, visits by international personalities, conferences and wonders of all kinds, from the largest Luna Park in Europe to the cable car to Cavoretto, from the red double-decker bus, to the wonder among wonders, the monorail of Italia '61, the "aerial railway".
