Geocache Description:

Wetland Woods

Wetlands have been described as, providing a transition between dry land and water bodies.

This is a non-tidal wetlands as it is inland and not along a shore line where tides come in. It is also peatland as the soil is from a build up of slowly decaying plant life. Wet lands have water covering them all or part of the year and the water will always be close to the surface. In this small woods the surrounding wetlands have filled in to the point that many trees are now able to grow. As you walk you will find that the soil is soft and spungy and if you are there in the late winter and spring your feet will often be in water. Hikers here have had to pull their shoes up out of the muck. You may see that some of the trees that have fallen down are uprooted, meaning that the ground was to wet and soft for the roots to hold the tree up.
