We truly live in one of the most amazing places in Australia. Its diversity is what makes it unique. Wollongong is an industrial steel making city located approx' 80km south of Sydney. Wollongong lies on a narrow coastal strip between the Illawarra escarpment and the Pacific Ocean.
From Helensburgh in the north, to Windang in the south and west to the escarpment, Wollongong is home to approx' 300000 people, with the life blood of the city being the steelmaking facilities of BlueScope (BHP) where they produce over 500 tonnes of flat rolled steel each year. The area's plentiful supply of coal made it an ideal location for steel making. The port and harbour is home to 800 vessel movements each year. Coal, grain, steel and cars are the main commodities passed through the port.
The Wollongong coastline offers some of the best beaches and rock pools in the world. The coast has iconic surf breaks for all levels of surfing, the adjoining headlands offer great vantage points for whale watching as humpback whales migrate along the coastline between May and November. On most days, fishermen can be seen off the coast or on the rocky headlands catching a feed.
The Illawarra escarpment is an adventure playground for those who rock climb, bushwalk or mountain bike. Almost daily, a parachutest can be seen landing not far from the CBD and hang-gliders soar above at Bald Hill.
