In ancient times, the Lenape Indians would gather at the springs every summer. They set up camps by the spring-fed pond, drawn by the belief in its healing powers. One remarkable story tells of Lenape King Ockanickon, who was carried from a distant place on his deathbed to the spring. There, he experienced a miraculous revival thanks to the flowing spring water. This special area around the spring became known as the “Cold Indian Springs,” a name that still echoes today in what we now call Wayside.
