About Canby Southern Pacific Railroad Depot

The Oregon and California first steamed into what would become Canby in 1870. Ben Holladay, who was the chief of the railroad, named the town after his friend Brigador-General Edward Richard Canby. The town was platted and quickly grew with the railroad at its center. Canby is the second oldest city in Clackamas County, incorporated in 1893. The O&C later became the Southern Pacific Railroad. The current depot was erected at N 1st and Grant Streets around 1891 and is a standard Southern Pacific #11 design.
The station served the railroad and the city well until better roads were built and saw a decline in passengers. The depot closed in 1976. The SP offered the depot to Canby in 1978 on the condition that it would be moved off of railroad property. The depot was relocated to its present location in 1983. Part of the freight portion of the depot was removed, but its material was used to restore the passenger depot. The depot is now a museum.
