Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

St James Anglican Church in Waratah was built approximately 10 years after the discovery of tin in the area using timber felled in the immediate area. After over 130 years of service to the community, the church was deconsecrated in 2013. The condition of the building had detoriated markedly in the latter years. In 2015 the heritage listed building was bought by glass artists, renovated and reopened as a gallery and public meeting space. The artists sold the building in 2021 and there is a current development application to convert the former church into a private residence.

Waratah is a town established following the discovery of tin at nearby Mt Bischoff  on 4 December 1871. James "Philosopher" Smith made the discovery on St Barbara's Feast Day - coincidentally, St Barbara is the patron saint of miners.

Two weeks after this cache was published, the Waratah/Wynyard Council removed the sign and replaced it a short time later. This cache is based on the information in the new sign.

There is a new information sign on public space near the entrance to St James Church. From the sign, collect the following information:

* The foundation stone for St James Church was laid in ABCD

* The church opened on EF October GHJK

Use this information to calculate the location of the cache (which is over 500m away as the crow flies and about 1km by road). The cache is located at

S 41 26.(D/2) (C) (J)    E 145 31.(F-G) (K) [(C+E)/2]

Check digits for the decimal minutes:  S=19     E=10.

You are looking for a cammoed 1L sistema (not micro but sufficiently robust to withstand the wild winter weather).

Good Luck
