Once the home of the Gooderham and Worts distillery, the Distillery District is now designated as a National Historic Site. The sprawling facility occupies 13 acres of land on the eastern edge of downtown Toronto with dozens of buildings, many of which are attached to one another. The site was first used in 1837 when a still was set up here to convert surplus grain from an 1832 grist mill into whiskey. Over the years, Gooderham and Worts grew steadily alongside Toronto's own rise as a manufacturing centre with buildings being raised between 1859 and 1927. These buildings were used to produce, package, store, market and develop spirits.
Today, the production of spirits has long since ceased, with the successors of Gooderham and Worts having closed the facility in 1990. The area was purchased in 2001 and has been converted into a commercial and retail district containing numerous cafes, restaurants and shops housed within restored heritage buildings. The Distillery District is widely viewed as one of Canada's premier destinations for arts, culture and entertainment.
In addition to the buildings themselves, there are numerous public art installations, historic artifacts and commemorative plaques throughout the district. This virtual cache will bring you to some of these locations as you explore the Distillery District.
