Jedno od nezaobilaznih mjesta kod posjete gradu Rijeci svakako je Trsat i Trsatska gradina, jedna od najstarijih fortifikacija u Hrvatskom primorju u kojoj su sačuvana obilježja ranosrednjovjekovne gradogradnje.
Trsatska gradina, na 138 metara visokom brijegu strateški je izbočeni vidikovac koji dominira iznad Rijeke i dojmljiva usjeka Rječine. Na tom je podesnom mjestu od prapovijesti bila liburnijska osmatračnica odakle se kontrolirao put iz unutrašnjosti prema moru. Rimljanima je ta lokacija odlično poslužila u doba učvršćivanja obrambenog sustava, tzv. Liburnijskog limesa.
Trsatska se gradina prvi put spominje kao sjedište župe 1288. godine kod sastavljanja čuvenog Vinodolskog zakona.
Krčki knezovi Frankopani bili su trsatska vlastela sve do pred kraj 15. stoljeća nakon kojih je Trsatska gradina imala svoje promjene vlasnika da bi na kraju nakon otkupa grofa Nugenta 1826. godine i obnove i dogradnje gradine, nakon dva svjetska rata obitelji Nugent nije ju više mogla održavati te u drugoj polovici dvadesetog stoljeća Trsatska gradina postaje riječkom tvrđavom kulture i duha.
Danas je Trsatska gradina jedna od najposjećenijih kulturno-turističkih znamenitosti u Rijeci i Primorsko-goranskoj županiji.
Posebnu čar Trsatska gradina ima krajem godine za vrijeme adventa kada je okićena i osvijetljena tisućama svjetala.

One of the must-see places when visiting the city of Rijeka is certainly Trsat and Trsat Castle, one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast, which preserves the features of early medieval urban planning.
Trsat Castle, on a 138-meter-high hill, is a strategically protruding viewpoint that dominates Rijeka and the impressive gorge of the Rječina River. Since prehistoric times, there has been a Liburnian watchtower at this convenient location, from which the route from the interior to the sea was controlled. This location served the Romans well during the period of strengthening the defense system, the so-called Liburnian Limes.
Trsat Castle was first mentioned as the seat of a parish in 1288, when the famous Vinodol Law was drawn up.
The Frankopans of Krk were the lords of Trsat until the end of the 15th century, after which Trsat Castle had its own changes of ownership, and finally, after the purchase of Count Nugent in 1826 and the renovation and expansion of the castle after the two world wars, the Nugent family could no longer maintain it, and in the second half of the twentieth century, Trsat Castle finally became Rijeka's fortress of culture and spirit.
Today, Trsat Castle is one of the most visited cultural and tourist attractions in Rijeka and the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
Trsat Castle has a special charm at the end of the year during Advent, when it is decorated and illuminated with thousands of lights.
