Geocache Description:

Artist James Hubbell was internationally known for his artworks and his fantastical organic-architecture house and adjacent studios -- named Ilan-Lael -- located in Santa Ysabel/Wynola near Julian. Ilan-Lael translates from Hebrew to “a tree that unites the physical and the spiritual,” integrating art, nature and community in a dynamic setting. The name Ilan-Lael was first given by artist James Hubbell and his wife Anne to the structures they designed and built as both home and studios over the past 60 years on 10 acres near Santa Ysabel, California. The property received historic designation in 2008. Hubbell passed away in 2024 but his studio home/retreat and the Ilan-Lael Foundation continues his legacy.

I wanted to use this cache to bring people to Ilan-Lael, but visiting requires a reservation and a significant entry fee. So I decided to highlight this amazing artist at his Pacific Rim Park in San Diego, the Pearl of the Pacific.

In 1994, the Pacific Rim Park (PRP) and Ilan-Lael Foundation (ILF), under the artistic direction of artist James Hubbell, launched a global conversation between San Diego and Pacific Rim nations around the transformative power of art and the artistic process. Hubbell’s unique expression of art diplomacy resulted in public art parks built by an international contingent of architecture students in seven Pacific Rim cities. Through these shared art-making experiences, the diverse people and nations of the Pacific transcended language barriers and cultural differences to explore and celebrate their common humanity.
