🪑BROKEN CHAIR 🪑Virtual Reward 4.0 Virtual Cache

Broken Chair est une scuture monumentale en bois conçue par l'artiste suisse Daniel Berset et réalisée par le menuisier Louis Genève. Il est construit avec 5,5 tonnes de bois et mesure 12 mètres (39 pieds) de haut.

Il représente une chaise géante avec une jambe cassée et se trouve en face du Palais des Nations , à Genève . Il symbolise l'opposition aux mines terrestres et aux bombes à fragmentation et sert de rappel aux hommes politiques et aux diplomates en visite à Genève. 

Histoire 

Broken Chair est une idée et un projet original de Paul Vermeulen , co-fondateur et directeur de Handicap International Suisse. En octobre 1996, il a commandé l'installation d'une chaise haute de 10 mètres, avec un pied arraché, sur la Place des Nations, motivé pour tenter d'amener le plus grand nombre de nations à signer le Traité d'Ottawa sur les mines terrestres en décembre. 1997. La sculpture a été érigée par Handicap International devant l'entrée principale du Palais des Nations à Genève le 18 août 1997, où elle devait rester trois mois, jusqu'à la signature du Traité d'Ottawa en décembre 1997 à Ottawa. Après avoir été ratifié par 40 pays, le Traité est devenu effectif en tant qu'instrument de droit international le 1er mars 1999.

L'échec de nombreux pays à signer le Traité et le fort soutien du public en faveur de la sculpture l'ont amenée à rester en place jusqu'en 2005, date à laquelle elle a été retirée pour permettre un vaste remodelage de la Place des Nations. Une fois les travaux terminés, il a été réinstallé au même endroit devant l' Office des Nations Unies à Genèvele 26 février 2007.

La réinstallation de Broken Chair en février 2007 a été officiellement consacrée par Handicap International pour soutenir la signature d'un traité international sur l'interdiction des armes à sous-munitions , signé à Oslo en décembre 2008.

L'œuvre est restée la propriété du sculpteur jusqu'en 2004, date à laquelle il en a cédé la propriété à Handicap International.

History

Broken Chair is an original idea and project of Paul Vermeulen, co-founder and director of Handicap International Switzerland.In October 1996, he commissioned the 10 meters high chair, with a torn-off leg, to be installed on the Place des Nations, motivated to try to get as many nations to sign Ottawa Treaty. on landmines in December 1997. The sculpture was erected by Handicap International in front of the main entrance to the Palace of Nations in Geneva on the 18th of August 1997, where it was intended to remain for three months, until the signing of the Ottawa Treaty in December 1997 in Ottawa. Following ratification by 40 countries, the Treaty became effective as an instrument of international law on 1 March 1999.

The failure of many countries to sign the Treaty and the strong public support for the sculpture caused it to be left in place until 2005, when it was removed to allow extensive remodeling of the Place des Nations. After completion of the work, it was reinstalled in the same place in front of the United Nations Office at Geneva on 26 February 2007.

The reinstallation of Broken Chair in February 2007 was officially dedicated by Handicap International to support the signature of an international treaty on a ban on cluster munitions, which was signed in Oslo in December 2008.

The work was the property of the sculptor until 2004, when he transferred ownership to Handicap International.
