Geocache Description:

Please allow me to introduce you to La Gorda Gertrudis in the middle of a busy Cartagena city plaza.  This oversized, naked, bronze sculpture of a woman was created by Fernando Botero, a world famous sculptor from Medellín, Colombia.  In 2000, he donated La Gorda Gertrudis to Cartagena.

Botero is known for his extraordinary love for fat things.  Each of his sculptures is fat.  Whether it be a human, animal, or any other object of his choice, it will be transformed into a chunky version of itself.  His sculptures may be found around the world, from cities in Colombia, to Hong Kong, to European countries, and even in New York City.  In both Bogotá and Medellín you will find plazas with multiple sculptures by Botero

As more travelers visit Cartagena rather than other cities in Colombia having Botero’s work, I selected La Gorda Gertrudis to introduce you to Botero’s work.  You are encouraged to visit the sculptures in Bogotá and Medellín if your journey takes you to those cities.

La Gorda Gertrudis is located in Plaza Santo Domingo, named for the Santo Domingo church found in one of plaza’s corners.  The square itself has a sordid past as the site of executions and persecutions during the Spanish Inquisition.  Happily, today the square is a charming place with beautiful buildings, museums, restaurants with outdoor seating, and talented street musicians.

Rumor has it that if you give her breast a rub, you will have good luck.  Others say that it means that you will return to Cartagena.

To log your find, please include two things in your found log:

1.  Post a recognizable photo of yourself with your hand touching La Gorda Gertrudis.  For those who prefer not to show your face or portion of your head, post a photo showing your caching name and the date of your visit on it, with your hand touching the statue while holding your name card.

April 1, 2025 update: Your hand not touching - skin to scupture?  Don't bother logging.

2.  In your log, include a few words of why you are in Cartagena and how you got there.  A tourist on a cruise ship?  Driving tour of the country?

NO EXCEPTIONS – logs not meeting requirements for both attached photo and travel explanation will be deleted.
