Geocache Description:

A Broughty Ferry war heroine has been honoured by a new sculpture.

Winkie is the subject of a new bronze casting that now sits by the flood gates in Beach Crescent.

On 23 February 1942 the crew of an RAF Beaufort bomber were returning from a mission in Norway.  It had been badly damaged after being hit by enemy fire and crashed into the North Sea about 120 miles from home.  The crew then waited in freezing cold waters, unable to radio an accurate position back to base.

Winkie made it home to raise the alarm with RAF Leuchars, who launched a rescue mission and the four crew members were safely found.

Winkie was awarded the Dickin Medal for saving them.

When she died the Medal was given to Dundee Museums.

This sculpture has been commissioned to ensure that the story of Winkie will never be forgotten.

Her Dickin Medal can be found in the McManus Museum, Dundee.

This bronze casting has been created by renowned Scottish sculptor David Annand.
