Lawson Gardens is Pullman's only formal public garden and is located at 705 SE Derby St. The gardens are centered around a large reflecting pool and gazebo, and feature seasonal plantings, walkways, and a grassy area.
In 1985, Gerald Lawson, a local farmer, donated the land and funds for the development of the gardens.
In 1987, the gardens were dedicated in memory of Lawson's first wife, Alice.
In 1990, the Pullman Rotary Club donated funds for a circular rose garden. The garden was planted in 1991-92 with 600 rose bushes.
In 1991, a perennial garden was planted along the east side of the garden. This garden was designed and constructed in a collaborative effort between horticulturist Varnel Williams and volunteers Irene Spencer and Dennis Simpson. The perennials provide unique and colorful displays year round. Plans for future development of the gardens include a conservatory for tropical and indoor plants as well as theme gardens, such as woodland, Japanese, lilac and native plant gardens.
Lawson Gardens is a popular wedding location in Pullman.
If a wedding is taking place or just setting up please don't use the Lawson Gardens' parking lot. Instead, park on SE Dilke Street next to Krugel Park and walk over for the needed photo op.
