Love in the Rain by Bruce Voyce Welcome to Love in the Rain the Vancouver Park Board's first love lock sculpture. Local artist Bruce Voyce, submitted this winning design in response to a competition for a Vancouver specific sculpture that would allow visitors to partake in the love lock tradition.
Love locks are padlocks that romantic partners have traditionally locked to a bridge, gate or similar public fixture to show their love. Names or initials are inscribed on a padlock, and its key is disposed of to sympolize an unbreakable bond. in an effort to prevent damage to the city infrastructure, interactive sculptures such as the one in front of you, have been developed in many cities around the world.
Bruce designed this sculpture in 2016 to act as a participatory art project that speaks of love in the temperate rainforest. It celebrates the shelter that love brings and the union that it forms.
Locks are only meant to be attached to the four couples and not the umbrellas, to help ensure integrity of the art piece and for public safety. Please dispose of keys in the collection box provided.
Before this love lock sculpture exsisted, I tooked my now wife to Queen Elizabeth Park for the day where I waited to sunset to ask for her hand in marriage. The spot we picked to view the sunset was this bench that is just west of Love in the Rain. At this point in time there was a beautiful view for a sunset. Now 27 years later the trees have grown too high for a great view. But now there is a love lock sculpture that in our mind commemorates our proposal.
