This Virtual Cache will take you to the center of the West Coast World War II Submarine Memorial. It's listed hours on the website are 10am - 5pm everyday, however, I've never had an issue visiting outside those hours as long as there's daylight left. It's free to visit and free parking is right next to the memorial area (turn into the driveway for the Naval Weapons Station then immediately turn left to go park next to the memorial. You do not need to check in at the security gate!). Dedicated in 1977, this shrine pays tribute to the over 3,000 submariners who never returned from the war. This memorial includes plaques for each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost in that conflict, as well as additional plaques representing submarines lost during the postwar Cold War era. Of the 12,000 sailors serving in submarines during the war, one in four did not return.
This Virtual Cache is a tribute to those 3000+ submariners we lost. Please take time to read some of the individual submarine monuments that line the rear of this memorial.
To log this Virtual Cache as a find, you need to do 2 things:
1. Take a picture of you or an object that you like to use in front of one of the inividual submarine memorials and add it to your log.
2. Message me your caching name and the three digit number stamped on the nose of the torpedo. (Hint: it's stamped upside down)
You don't need to wait for me to respond! Go ahead and log this after you send your answer. If there's an issue, I will contact you.
