Linköpings slott

är Sveriges äldsta bevarade profana byggnad med delar från 1100-talet, vilka är inbyggda i slottets västra länga. Slottet ligger högt beläget mittemot Linköpings domkyrka. Trakten kring Linköping var säte för den Sverkerska ätten under tidig medeltid och centrum för kloster och kyrkobyggande i Sverige. Slottet uppfördes ursprungligen som en biskopsgård 1149 och den siste katolske biskopen som bodde här var Hans Brask. 1527 flydde han kung Gustav Vasa som i samband med reformationen tog över biskopens alla gårdar och förvandlade borgen till ett kungligt slott. Kung Gustav Vasa gästade länet och Linköping flertal gånger och bodde då här. På slottet hölls rättegången efter Slaget vid Stångebro. Det ledde fram till Linköpings blodbad den 20 mars år 1600 då fem personer avrättades på Stora torget. Under sent 1700-tal renoverades slottet till en bostad för länets landshövding vilket det är än idag. 1795 blev slottet residens för Landshövdingen i Östergötlands län, som därmed även är Ståthållare på Linköpings slott och då ingår i de Icke tjänstgörande hovstaterna vid Kungliga hovet. I den vackra residensvåningen finns Estelle-salongen med handmålade väggar. Prinsessan Estelle är sedan 2012 hertiginna av Östergötland.

Linköping Castle

is oldest preserved profane building in Sweden with parts from the 12th century, in the castle's western wing. The castle is situated close to Linköping's cathedral. The area around Linköping was the residence of the Sverker family during the early Middle Ages and the center of monasteries and church buildings in Sweden. The castle was originally built as a bishop's farm in 1149. The last Catholic bishop who lived in the castle was Hans Brask. In 1527 he escaped from King Gustav Vasa who, during the Reformation period, took over all the bishop's farms and transformed it into a royal castle. King Gustav Vasa visited the county and Linköping several times and then he stayed here. The trial after the Battle of Stångebro was held at the castle. It led to the Linköping bloodbath on March 20, 1600, when five people were executed in Stora torget. During the late 18th century, the castle was renovated into a residence for the county's governor, which it still is today. In 1795, the castle was the residence of the County governor of Östergötland, who was also the Steward of Linköping Castle and included in the non-serving courtiers at the Royal Court. In the beautiful residence apartement you will find the Estelle salon with hand-painted walls. Princess Estelle has been Duchess of Östergötland since 2012.
