Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, home to one of only four Lancaster bombers in the world that have all four engines running and are taxiable (only two are flying). They even have scheduled events throughout the year where they bring it out and fire up all four engines, an impressive sight (and sound) for sure.

As a kid and into my teens, I remember the Lancaster bomber sitting out in the open where the hangar is now. For many years, it was the only attraction at the site.

In 1960, three Nanton businessmen bought a World War II Lancaster bomber from RCAF Vulcan for $513. The plane was moved to Nanton and became a local landmark and tourist attraction. Their motivation was to pay tribute to all Canadians who flew in them and sacrificed their lives in the war. Over the next 25 years, weather and vandals had caused significant damage to the bomber so a town councillor helped form the Nanton Lancaster Society in 1985. By 1991, they had raised enought funds and completed a hangar to house the Lanc. Over the next decade, the museum acquired a number of other aircraft including the Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck and the Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (the two somethings on a stick).

The name of the cache is a tribute to Tommi Potx's virtuals in Edmonton and Winnipeg. The name has always seemed like a fun premise to me and I usually end up saying it out loud when I drive through Nanton, Leduc, past the Lethbridge Legion or any plane that's been mounted on a pole.

Logging Requirements:

  1. With your online log, post a picture of yourself, your group, your caching name on a piece of paper or a personal item with either of the mounted planes. Each cacher in a group logging separately must include their own photo with their log. Bonus virtual points will be given if you happen to catch the Lancaster out on display, bonus bonus points if it is during an engine run.
  2. Near the entry to the museum, you will see a stone cairn with a propeller mounted on top. Email me with the latin phrase at the bottom of the Nanton Air Museum plaque.
