Geocache Description:

****** Gimghoul Castle is on private property. Do not trespass. The answers for this virtual geocache can be obtained by walking on the public paths of Battle Park. ******

Battle Park is open dawn to dusk 365 days a year.

Standing on a hill named Piney Prospect in Chapel Hill is Gimghoul Castle. The castle is owned by the Order of Gimghouls, a secret society at UNC-Chapel Hill

The Order of Gimghouls was founded by students at UNC in 1899. Among its alumni are many distinguished jurists, politicians, attorneys, and business people.

The castle was built in the 1920s by a group of stonemasons from Valdese, North Carolina or French artisans, depending on which history you read. It was first named Hippol Castle by the original members of the order, although they are the only people who refer to it by that name. Everybody else calls it Gimghoul Castle.

The castle sits upon a plot of land that is steeped with myth and legends. The myths surround the fate of Peter Dromgoole, a UNC student who went missing in 1833.  One myth has Peter Dromgoole killed in a duel over a buxom colonial maid by the name of Miss Fanny. Peter and an unidentified man allegedly met on Piney Prospect at midnight following the annual Commencement Ball at UNC. Both men were madly in love with Miss Fanny. It was agreed that a duel would settle the dispute and that the survivor would receive the hand of fair Fanny. Peter lost the duel and Dromgoole rock is said to be still stained with his blood.
