Rising to 192 metres (630 ft) Codden hill is a Hill overlooking the Village of Bishops Tawton. From the top there are veiws over the Taw Estuary and around North Devon, on a clear day veiws extend to Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin moor in Cornwall.
The pillar on Codden Hill is dedicated to Caroline Thorpe, the wife of the local MP Jeremy Thorpe; she died, aged 32, on 29 June 1970 in a car accident. The monument, designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, was dedicated on 4 December 1971 by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Crediton. Arounf the base are stones with the showing the places visible in that direction
