Geocache Description:

The Sky Art collection, featuring the metal creations of artist and welder Ricardo Breceda, can be found all over Galleta Meadows in Borrego Springs.  The metal sculptures of Borrego Springs have profoundly impacted the community economically and culturally. They have transformed the town into a must-visit destination for art lovers worldwide, attracting tourists who spend their time and money exploring the sculptures and supporting local businesses.

The Serpent is the largest of the over 130 full-sized metal sculptures in the collection, and one of the more whimsical ones.  It is 350 feet in length, and can be found on both sides of Borrego Springs Road.  It is made up of a dragon's head, a serpent's body and a rattlesnake's tail, comprising over 1000 scales.  It took the artist over 3 months to craft and 3 months to erect, and it was completed in 2010.

Originally you could drive right up to the sculpture, but in recent years access has been blocked to vehicles.  There is ample parking on Borrego Springs Road, just a short walk away from the serpent's head.

You can pick up a detailed map to the sculptures at the Anza Borrego Desert Natural History Association store, just one block west of Christmas Circle.  The full story of how Borrego Springs became home to an extensive collection of outdoor art is told in the book "Ricardo Breceda: Accidental Artist."
