The Shoal, Seaford's Community Bench
LOCATION
Situated at "Splash Point" at the eastern end of Seaford Esplanade
on the concrete jetty that connected the pumping station to the discharge pipe located further out to sea.
This always has been a point visited by locals and visitors for the views to the East and West.
TO THE EAST
You can see signs of coastal erosion and cliff falls.
There is a small chalk "Sea-stack" frequented by Cormorants drying their wings.
During the spring and summer months there is a colony of nesting Kittiwakes.
TO THE WEST
There are views of Seaford Bay and in the distance the breakwater and lighthouse of Newhaven Harbour.
During your visit you maybe lucky and see the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry reversing out of the harbour and lighthouse.
The Shoal, Seaford's Community Bench History
Working in partnership with Seaford Town Council and Seaford Community Partnership, Christian Funnell and Gabby Tofts designed and built this unique 16-metre-long sculpture.
It was to be funded by public subscriptions and built in stages as funds became available.
To raise the required funds members of the public were invited to buy a metal "fish" which would be engraved with a message of their choosing.
There was a choice of size of "fish" - the smallest and cheapest being a "sprat" for £85.
Sufficient fish were bought in the first few months to allow the project to be completed in full from the start and the list for donations and further purchases was closed.
Take your time, enjoy the views and read some of the inscriptions on the fish.
