B-29 Superfortress, Raz'n Hell

Raz'n Hell - Starboard Side

Raz'n Hell - Port Side

The Castle Air Museum's B-29 is displayed as 44-61535 which was the original RAZ'N HELL, however, this B-29 is a composite of three aircraft, (TAIL) 44-61535 (FUSELAGE) 44-70064 and (WINGS) 44-84084 which were recovered from the naval weapons center at China Lake and restored entirely at Castle Air Museum. The markings, including the nose art, are Korean War era of the 28th bombardment squadron, 19th bombardment group.
RAZ'N HELL, is a reference to the VB-3 "RAZON" high angle free fall 1000 LB. guided (flight controlled) bomb developed in 1944.
RAZ'N HELL saw extensive action during the Korean War with a tally of 45 bombing missions. She took ground fire hits throughout the fuselage starting on her second mission; the painted bomb symbols on her port side with red fins show which missions she was struck by enemy fire. Her last mission symbol is painted with green fins due to shooting herself. The radar operator, who had been firing the guns, did not allow the gun barrels to sufficiently cool before storing. While the turret was rotated, there were still two live rounds chambered. The rounds "cooked off" firing into the number three propeller and the fuel lines of number 4 engine.
RAZ'N HELL is a movie star. In 1979, Disney used the front fuselage in the movie The Last Flight of Noah's Ark in which cast aways repurposed a "downed" B-29 to make a raft.
RAZ'N HELL is also known as the "Haunted Bomber" due to reported anomalies. Castle Air Museum remains open minded yet think its B-29 is interesting with or without being a Super "Natural" Fortress.
