Banting House Virtual Cache
Banting House was constructed in 1900 and designated a National Historic Site in 1997.
Sir Frederick Banting, a Canadian Medical Scientist and Physician, was born in Alliston Ontario in November of 1891, and perished in plane crash in 1941.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 1916 to 1918, leaving the military with the rank of Captain. He was married twice with one child.
He won the Nobel Prize in 1923 for Physiology and Medicine, becoming it's youngest recipient at the time at the age of 32, and was knighted in 1934 becoming a Knight Commander of The Order of The British Empire, (KBE).
After reading a medical article about the pancreas, he became interested in Diabetes, and the treatment thereof. His idea was to extract insulin from dog pancreases.
Diabetes itself is a group of endocrine diseases characterized by sustained high blood sugar levels, due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin or cells of the body becoming unresponsive to the hormone's effects. His first experiments, and treatments utilized secretions from dog pancreases, but due to a need for greater quantities he was forced to move on to cow, and later pig secretions.
