Railroad development in Europe and the U.S began in the 1820's. In 1845 Portland businessmen realized that developing a railroad system would allow year round connectivity through the St. Lawrence river to the atlantic ocean. Maine legisation approved a charter for the Alantic and St. Lawrence railroad and the construction began in 1846.
Two years later they had a grand opening on July 4, 1848. As business on the railroad grew the Grand Trunk railroad took control of the line constructing a new passenger station in 1906. The Canada National railroad became owers of this line in 1923.Passenger service ended in 1967 with some freight being carried on the tracks until the early 21st century.
The station was saved from demolition in 1969 when the Yarmouth Village improvement society purchased the building.
The Station was placed on the National Registerof Historic places in 1979.
The building is now home to Gorham Savings bank. The exterior appearance and nearly all the original interior was restored.
