Geocache Description:

Spirit of Water

This sculpture, created by UK artist Gerry Judah is located amongst some of Calgary's newest building projects and on the home turf of the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" as well as some of our local prefessional sports organisations, in what is deemed the Cultural and Entertainment Disctrict of Calgary.

The sculpture, which stands at over 21 meters tall, in a brilliant unique aqua-blue colour, is the latest installment of Calgary's public art, and is an impressive sight when you round the corner.  It's creation through the use of 211 steel tubes ranging from 0.5 meters to 2 meters in diameter brings a playful and striking piece of art to a public space.  The sculpture weighs in at over 50,800 kg but somehow seems as light as a drop of water.

“My hope is that this sculpture will inspire viewers to reflect on the beauty and power of water, while also serving as a symbol of unity and connection within the community",  said the artist when asked about his inspiration.  Ironically, this virtual cache is being published during an unprecidented water emergency in our large city.

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS:

In order to log this virtual as found, you must do the following:

1.  Take a photo of you AT the sculpture, interacting with it in some creative way.  If you do not want your face in the photo, you can show yourself and your GPS, a Geocaching related item or your geocaching name and date written on a piece of paper.  This photo must be posted with your Found log.

2.  Message me (using the Geocaching Message Center or my email)

     a) "Spirit of Water" GCAJFT1 and who is in your caching entourage for this virtual

     b) Number of tubes in the sculpture and height of the sculpture in meters (hint: read the cache page)

     c) The alphanumeric embossment from one of the many bolts in the sculpture (if you can't see it on one, look at another)

As I was researching the area, I ran into something unique as well, and if you find it, you will get some 'bonus caching points'.  My cousin is a very talented artist in the city and does quite a bit of public art projects - you have likely seen one of her pieces around town or on various local products.  One of her projects was a manhole cover, and I found one of her's right in the vicinity of the sculture.  If you find it, post a picture too!

You can see a selection of her public art here: Mary Haasdyk --- or specifically the manhole cover here: Manhole Cover Art
