Geocache Description:

Beamauris Zoo

History

Beaumaris Zoo, located in Hobart, Tasmania, was originally a private menagerie founded by Mary Grant Roberts in 1895. Roberts, an avid animal enthusiast, started the zoo at her residence, "Beaumaris House," where she kept a variety of exotic and native animals. By 1905, the zoo had gained significant recognition, housing species such as tigers, lions, and Tasmanian devils. Her contributions to zoology were noted as she worked with various scientific communities to study animal behavior and preserve endangered species. Following her death in 1921, the Hobart City Council took over the zoo's management, transforming it into a public facility.

The Beaumaris Zoo is most famously remembered as the home of the last known thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, which died in captivity in 1936. This marked a significant and tragic moment in the history of Australian wildlife, as the species became officially extinct. Due to financial difficulties and a lack of resources, the zoo was closed in 1937. Though the site is now in ruins, its historical significance, particularly in relation to the thylacine, remains a poignant chapter in Tasmania's cultural and environmental heritage.

We visited this location while we were in town for a 50th birthday party for a local geocacher. As it turns out the day we visited was National Threatened Species Day. Quite fitting for this location and a virtual cache.
