Geocache Description:

English:

It took two years to build the lighthouse at Røsnæs. From 1844-46 craftsmen were at work and finished with the red hat on the lantern. The lighthouse was then 11 meters high and built together with the lighthouse keeper's residence, so that the lighthouse keeper could easily monitor the lens apparatus and ensure that the ships could pass Røsnæs in good order. In 1859 the lighthouse was raised to the current 15 meters and a total of 24 meters above sea level, and in 1895 the lens apparatus was changed to a rotating one of its kind. Only in 1947 did it get an electric rotary engine – instead of mercury – and a 500 watt incandescent lamp.

Until 2008, the lighthouse was the workplace for several people. The lens mechanism of French rock crystal meant that the cone of light could be seen almost 40 kilometers away in clear weather. Like all other lighthouses in Denmark, the lighthouse at Røsnæs shone in its own way. First there was light for one second and then four seconds of darkness. The total of five seconds was exactly the time it took the cone of light to turn one revolution.

In 2008, The Maritime Administration handed over the lighthouse to the Danish Nature Agency, as modern technology had made permanent staff redundant. Now the beacon is switched off, and instead it is a fully automatic radio beacon that shows the sailing way. In the small wooden house just below the lighthouse sits the Navy's Operative Command and keeps an eye on ship traffic.

Today the lighthouse is open to the public and full of war history.

Loggingrequirement: Take a picture where you point at the lighthouse, at the given coords. - and attach to your log.
