The Hawaii Mars was one of 6 planes originally designed as an aerial battleship carrying ten tons of bombs and four powered machine gun turrets each.Two of the 6 planes were lost in the last few days of WW2 .In 1956 the US Navy sold the 4 remaining planes to Forest Industries Flying Tankers Ltd,a Canadian company. They were based at Sproat Lake B.C. and converted into short range water bombers. Special scoops were mounted enabling the planes to take in 7200 gallons of water during a 20 second water run.The Marianas Mars was lost in an early training exercise and the Caroline Mars was lost to a hurricane on the lake.The 2 remaining planes (Hawaii and Phillipines Mars) continued to fight fires for 45 years. In 2007 they were purchased by Coulson Group. August 11 2024 was the final flight of the Hawaii Mars to its new home at the B.C.Aviation Museum.
