The Cilivian Conservation Corp was a program started in the Great Depression for unemployed young men (1933-1942). The men were housed in camps run by the army and participated in a number of programs including forestry, flood/erosion control, building bridges and roads, as well as developing public camp grounds. Many of the parks in Washington State have the disinct 'park rustic' or 'parkitecture' style use in CCC projects.
As explained by the 3rd Director of the National Park Service Arno B. Cammerer:
IN any area in which the preservation of the beauty of Nature is a primary purpose, every proposed modification of the natural landscape, whether it be by construction of a road or erection of a shelter, deserves to be most thoughtfully considered. A basic objective of those who are entrusted with development of such areas for the human uses for which they are established is, it seems to me, to hold these modifications to a minimum and so to design them that, besides being attractive to look upon, they appear to belong to and be a part of their settings.
CCC park structures such as rest rooms, picnic shelters and cabins were made of native materials found on site. The structures were supposed to add to the natural beauty, not detract from it. Deception Pass was home to a large CCC camp and their legacy can be seen all throughout the park. From the stone/timber lined roadways into the park, to the restroom and picnic structures, parkitecture is all around.
To log this virtual, you will need to go to two waypoints and message me with the answers to two questions. Please do not post photos that show the answers in your log.
1) Waypoint 1 - What year was the statue dedicated? Bonus points if you know how many of these statues are sprinkled across the United States.
2) Waypoint 2 - What is the name of the center exhibit at the interperative center.
Washington State Parks require a Discover Pass for use of the park. The cost is $30.00 per year or $10.00 per day. At most parks there is parking for 15 minute increments that can be used by non-pass holders. These are usually located by restrooms. Gathering the information for this virtural should not take longer than 15 minutes. I hope you are able to stay longer, enjoy the almost 100 year old structures as well as the incredible views.
