Eldredge, the Red Elephant, which you will find at this location, has become a symbol of the Danville River District's recent revitalization. Once a major industrial and commercial hub in southern Virginia, countless local businesses failed and/or left town during the mid-to-late twentieth century, and the River District faded to a ghost of its former glory. However, In the past decade, thanks to a dedicated effort to restore life to this once-thriving hub, the River District has established itself as a new, vibrant commercial center.
The elephant's name is Eldredge because the sculpture resides in the shell of the old Eldredge's Drugstore on Craghead Street. While you're in the vicinity, please some of the "classic" geocaches in the area. Please enjoy!
