The National Park idea is rooted in Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove. In 1864, President Lincoln signed legislation protecting the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley for "public use, resort, and recreation." In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt went on an historic trip with John Muir, President of the Sierra Club. They camped here, beneath the “Grizzly Giant”, the largest Sequoia in Yosemite. During that trip, Muir convinced Roosevelt of the need to protect Yosemite and other natural spaces for the people of the United States.
In order to log this Virtual Cache, you have two tasks.
Message or email me the answer to this question:
1. How many federally managed parks, monuments, and preserves did Theodore Roosevelt sign into existence after this trip?
2. Add a photo of yourself or your GPS device and the Grizzly Giant. Be sure to respect the delicate roots of this National Treasure and stay on the trail side of the barrier.
Once you have sent your response, you may log the cache. I will let you know if you are incorrect.
Note: The relatively flat loop trail to the cache is 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the parking area/ shuttle bus stop. There is closer parking and a shorter (0.26 mile, 0.42 km) trail for people displaying a disability placard on their car.
