Geocache Description:

THIS IS A VIRTUAL CACHE, THERE IS NO LOG TO SIGN -- LOGGING REQUIREMENTS CAN BE FOUND BELOW.

Welcome to The Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, Illinois! The "Jewel of Joliet" first opened it's doors in 1926 and is considered one of the nation's Top 10 theatres for its aesthetics alone. This historic venue, known for its stunning architecture, grand atmosphere, magnificent rotunda, luxurious lobby, and the Barton theatre organ, has played host to award winning actors, musicians, comedians and more for nearly a century. What opened originally as a vaudeville movie palace, now houses mainly musicals, plays, concerts, and stand-up comedy. Performers such as Johnny Cash, Tony Bennett, Cary Grant, Jay Leno, Liberace, Jerry Seinfeld, Red Skelton, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cosby, Kenny Rogers, the Chicago Pops and Andy Williams have taken to the stage. Productions like A Chorus Line, Rent, Cats, South Pacific, Ragtime and Annie have all been enjoyed from inside this theatre.

Tours are available of this magnificent palace built for the people that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1978. If the opportunity presents itself to visit the esplanade, or inner lobby, you shouldn't pass it up! It was designed after the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles near Paris, France. The arch between the esplanade and rotunda area has been carefully copied from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. In the center is the head of the goddess Athena. The elegant rotunda is surrounded by 18 Corinthian-style columns, and surmounted by a dome very similar to the Pantheon in Rome. The suspended eight-arm crystal chandelier, the “Duchess,” bronze giant of some 200 fixtures, is 20 feet long with 250 lights.
