Welcome to the Kansas State Capitol!
This classically-inspired building is Kansas’ most important architectural treasure as well as the working offices for the governor and legislators. Completed in 1903, the Capitol is 17 feet higher than the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D. C. Restored to its early 20th-century appearance, the Capitol features a dramatic array of art, sculpture, and colorful Kansas history within its walls and on the grounds.
Interior Dome View
The inner dome is composed of 256 glass panels. The
900-pound chandelier is a replica of the original fixture,
which was donated in 1942 to the World War II scrap
metal drive.
Dome Tours:
This spectacular tour is breathtaking—literally—with 296
steps and no elevators. The climb to the top includes a
series of straight, steep, narrow, spiral, and irregularly
spaced landings and stairs.
Not recommended for children younger than four; women
who are pregnant; persons with heart, back, neck, and knee
issues; fear of heights; breathing problems; or disability that
requires a cane or walker. Rest areas and restrooms are not
available on the tour route.
Tour guides must accompany visitors to the dome.
First floor
First floor highlights include murals by David H. Overmyer, plus the ornate stenciling in the rotunda, and a view up toward the inner dome.
Second floor
Features on this floor include murals by John Steuart Curry, the well known Tragic Prelude and Kansas Pastoral. Murals by Lumen Martin Winter are located in the rotunda, as are the four statues by Peter Felten, Jr. The ceremonial governor's office is one of the highlights of the tour.
Third floor
The spectacular Senate Chamber in the east wing and Representative Hall in the west wing are important tour stops. The ornate Old Kansas Supreme Court in the south wing and State Library of Kansas in the north wing are equally impressive.
Fourth floor
The east and west wing galleries offer a great view of the two beautiful spaces.
Fifth floor
The dome murals by Abner Crossman can be viewed from fifth floor.

Monday - Friday: 9:15, 10:15, and 11:15 am.; 1:15, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m.
Saturday: 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.; 1:15, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m.
Entering the building
- Only public entrance is on ground level through the north wing from 8th Avenue
To Claim this Cache: Please take a picture of yourself with something that has the date* on it (previous visits won't count, hence the date), or something with your caching name and date on it at the outside area at the top of the Topeka capitol building and post it with your log. Caches without a photo for proof will be deleted. The background image shows the outside area where you will need to take your picture in case you don't understand the location. It is a 4.5 terrain. You will have to take a scheduled dome tour with a tour guide in order to qualify for this cache. The tour is FREE. Even though I've posted tour times on here, they may be subject to change so call or check the website for possible changes. Be advised that due to inclement weather, etc. you may not be allowed to go outside at the top. Since you have to do this to qualify for the cache, be sure when you schedule your tour, that the outside access won't be closed.
