Nappan Experimental Farm, Virtual Reward 4.0
Canada's experimental farms system was established in 1886 by a federal government eager to introduce profitable new methods and products. Of the five original farms, this one, comprising upland and marsh soils, was selected in 1887 to serve the Maritimes. In seeking solutions to the area's crop and livestock problems, the Nappan Experimental Farm continues to conduct research on methods of improving livestock management systems and crop production on both upland and dykeland soils.
The other four sites established at the same time were Brandon Experimental Farm, Brandon MB, Agassiz Experimental Farm, Agassiz, BC, Indian Head Research Farm, Indian Head, SK, and Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, ON.
As of 2023 the site encompassed 598 acres (242 ha; 0.934 sq mi) of mixed pastureland, including reclaimed salt marshes. Studies focused primarily on climate monitoring, soil research;(including full botanical and nutritional analysis), estimating pasture biomass, and the analyzing of forage and feed samples. The centre also extended into livestock research, housing cow/calf pairs, finishing cattle, and heifers.
Nappan Experimental Farm has been home to a federal weather station since it's inception.
