The Kuehne Bell Tower is a very familiar site and sound to students at Washburn University.
The Kuehne Bell Tower at Washburn University is an iconic symbol, standing 55 feet tall and centrally located on campus. Its four bells originally hung in the Thomas Memorial Gymnasium before being relocated to the tower after the 1966 Topeka tornado tore down the gymnasium.
The four bells range from 275 pounds to 1,200 pounds built by the Meneely Bell Company, in Troy, New York, were a surprise gift from Jonathan and Josephine Thomas to Washburn in 1910. Unlike the gymnasium that housed them, the bells weathered the tornado in 1966 and found a new home when Fred and Julia Kuehne made a donation for the creation of Kuehne Bell Tower.
The bells have been restored to enable remote control and chime every quarter hour between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays, with shorter hours on weekends. The chimes culminate in all four bells ringing together at the top of each hour, echoing across campus.
