Geocache Description:

New Brighton Pier is the biggest ocean pier in Australasia. It is 312m long, 6m wide and stands 7m above high tide. It was officially opened on 1 November 1997, on the site of the original pier which stood here from 1894 until 1965 when it was demolished because it had become unsafe. The original pier was built of wood and provided the citizens of Christchurch with a recreational destination in the traditional British style. Along the way there was a “penny arcade” full of games and amusements and even a nightclub, the Shoreline, at the shore end.

A group of residents who had formed the Pier and Foreshore Society to try to save the pier continued to campaign for a new pier. Thirty years of lobbying and fundraising in the community saw almost $2 million raised, which was matched by a further $2 million from the Christchurch City Council and a new pier design was approved with a new library, a café and a restaurant at the landward end.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the opening of the New Brighton Pier on 21 June 2007, it became permanently lit with a combination of red, green and blue LED lights along the underside of the pier. The pier was the setting for annual Guy Fawkes fireworks displays. From July 2021, it has been the venue for fireworks to celebrate Matariki.

Your task to claim the cache find is simple - go to the posted coordinates and:

  • Take and add to your log a photo with yourself (face not required), your GPS device or something showing your Geocaching nickname, with the Pier clearly visible in the background.
  • Find out what was the donation amount from Show Home Project (from one of the small plaques at the end of the pier). Please verify it with the Certitude checker by clicking on the button below (enter digits only, without symbols or punctuation). If your geocaching nickname appears in the solvers list, you are all good to log the cache. If it doesn't, you might need to open it again and sign in with your geocaching account. There is no need to send the answer to me.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

I have attached a couple of logging example photos in the cache gallery.

The location is wheelchair accessible, however I have set it to T1.5 because you do still need to cover some distance to get here.

P.S. There is also an Adventure Lab that will give you a more in-depth timeline of the pier. You can do this while walking to GZ. The Pier through the years - labs.geocaching.com
