Geocache Description:

Cell phone reception is poor here.

The Cape of Good Hope is a popular excursion for visitors staying in Cape Town, South Africa. This is a  beautiful spot, with unpredictable weather. It is a promontory off of the southern tip of South Africa.

The first European to sight the Cape was Portuguese navigator Bartholomieu Dias in 1488, on his return voyage to Portugal after ascertaining the southern limits of the African continent.

This area has captured the imagination of European sailors such as Dias who first named it the Cape of Storms, and later in 1580 Sir Francis Drake who called it “The Fairest Cape in all the World”

It is sometimes MISTAKENLY thought of as the southern most point of Africa and the spot where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

WHO KNOWS THOUGH, THIS COULD BE YOUR SOUTHERNMOST GEOCACHE ?

The actual geographic southern tip of Africa and the beginning of the traditional dividing line between the  Atllantic and  Indian Oceans, is Cape Agulhas  ("Cape of Needles"), which is a rocky headland in Western Cape RSA. It is approximately half a degree of latitude, or 55 kilometres (34 mi), further south than the where you stand
