In 1919, Deadwood sheriff, Seth Bullock, built the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower. He built this tower as a dedication to President Theodore Roosevelt. The two of them were close friends for many years. Seth wanted to create a memorial of his friend and also wanted a place where people could view the magnificent, wide-open spaces that the both of them loved so much.
Not only was Seth Bullock the first sheriff of Deadwood, but he was also a U.S. Marshall for South Dakota. He also helped establish Wind Cave National Park, Devil’s Tower National Monument, and the D.C. Booth National Fish Hatchery. Both Bullock and Roosevelt played a major role in the conservation movement of the Black Hills.
The Mount Theodore Roosevelt Loop is a moderately challenging, 0.8-mile loop trail that is located near Deadwood, SD. It has a 164-foot elevation gain and is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and running. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
