...im Odenwald, steht hier auf der Neunkirchner Höhe seit 1997, auf der Grenze zwischen Lautertal und Modautal.
Laut „Bergsträßer Anzeiger“ steht der Baum „bei Gadernheim“ (Landkreis Bergstraße). Gepflanzt wurde der Baum jedoch vom Verschönerungsverein Lützelbach (Gemeinde Modau, Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg). Gepflegt wird er vom Bauhof Modautal. Daher habe ich die Koordinaten dieses Virtual knapp im Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg verortet.
Welche Apfelsorte ist das eigentlich?
Die Infotafel verschweigt dies.
Passend wäre ja die Sorte „Odenwälder“, eine aus der Gruppe der Renetten. Diese wird als „reichtragende Sorte, widerstandsfähig gegen Krankheiten und Schädlinge, aber mit geringer innerer Qualität der Früchte“ beschrieben. Informierte Kreise bezeichnen den Geschmack der Äpfel dieses Baumes als den „typischer Apfelwein-Äpfel“. Das kann man als Euphemismus für „sauer“ auffassen und würde somit zur Sorte „Odenwälder“ passen. Oder handelt es sich um eine essbare Sorte und der Geschmack ist dem raueren Klima in dieser Höhe geschuldet? Tatsächlich sagen manche, es handele sich um eine „Goldparmäne“. Diese Sorte, ebenfalls zu den Renetten gehörend, galt jahrhundertelang als eine der besten Tafelobstsorten. Deshalb wurde sie in Frankreich „Reine des Reinettes“ (Königin der Renetten) und in England „King of the Pippins“ genannt.
Und auf welcher Höhe steht er denn nun?

Macht ein Foto von euch vor dem Apfelbaum. Euer Gesicht muss nicht erkennbar sein, aber auch euer GPS, ein Travel Bug oder euer Caching-Name auf einem Papier werden akzeptiert. Stellt das Foto in euren Log ein.

Findet die Meereshöhe heraus: Gegenüber dem Baum, auf der anderen Seite des Weges, auf dem Pfosten mit den vielen Wegweisern, findet ihr die Höhenangabe. Schickt mir die Angabe („Höhe ü NHN xxx m“) als Mail oder Nachricht (nicht in den Log schreiben!).
Beachtet bitte: Ich werde alle Logs ohne Bild löschen, ebenso wenn ich die Höhenangabe nicht erhalte. Aber wartet nicht auf eine Freigabe von mir, ich melde mich nur, wenn etwas nicht stimmt!

Vorschlag für euren Log (keine Logbedingung): Schreibt, ob und welche Apfelsorte ihr mögt, oder ob ihr Äppelwoi, Apfelschnaps, Cider, Schorle, Saft, getrocknete Apfelringe, gedeckten Apfelkuchen oder nichts davon bevorzugt!
Welcome to the highest (though not the tallest) apple tree in the Hessian Odenwald.
In 1997, members of the Lützelbach Beautification Association planted this tree precisely on the border between the Lauter and Modau valleys. Their goal was to promote knowledge about regional apple varieties and encourage the use of genuinely local products like apple juice, apple wine, apple brandies, and other specialties made from Odenwald apples.
But what kind of apples does this tree bear?
The information board at the tree doesn't specify! Well-informed sources tell us that the taste of the apples is typical for those used for „Äppelwoi“-making (apple wine). Is this just a euphemism for tart or bitter? And if so, is it due to the specific variety or the harsh weather at this elevation? It might be the latter, as many believe the apples are of the “King of the Pippins” variety. This ancient variety originated in Normandy hundreds of years ago. It is known as “Reine des Reinettes” in France and “Goldparmäne” in Germany. In 1851, Robert Hogg, in his book "British Pomology," described it as “one of the richest flavored early dessert apples, unmatched by any other variety of the same season.” However, some modern apple growers argue that if this variety were discovered today, it might not earn the title "King." Regardless, the author of this Cache has had the pleasure of tasting this apple variety in his grandparents' garden and confirms its excellent quality, even when stored well into February.

The information board doesn't provide this detail either. But you can find out!
